Who is qualified to teach?
- Anyone with a heart for our children and a commitment to our mission statement is welcome to teach. Those interested in offering a class are asked to complete a teacher application form or an online teacher application request.
- Teachers commit to one semester at a time, and lead the planning, preparation and presentation of the weekly class they are offering. Some classes are led by a single teacher and others are co-taught by a team. Teachers are supported by as many classroom assistants as they need, usually 1-3. The teacher sets the class supply fee and size limit, so that teaching is a manageable and enjoyable experience for them. If sickness or other emergencies come up, teachers are asked to find a substitute, (usually one of their classroom assistants who is already familiar with the students and material).
What kinds of classes are usually offered?
- Teachers may select virtually any topic to teach. Some classes that have been taught in the past, or have been suggested as possible topics are: Language Arts (writing, debate, vocabulary, communications, public speaking, the alphabet, genre- or topic-specific literature for any age, book publishing, mythology, etc); Science (chemistry, physics, earth science, animals, plants, weather, astronomy, magnetism, simple machines, human anatomy, engineering, etc.); History/Social Studies (local history, communities, topics from American or world history, specific events, peoples, geography, etc.); Math (numbers/numeration, geometry, time, measurement, real-life math, probability/statistics, etc.); Arts (music/art appreciation, sculpture, ceramics, painting, photography, etc); Crafts (jewelry-making, beading, kintting/crocheting, calligraphy, origami, arts and crafts, etc.); Business (stock market, resume writing, personal finance, etc.); Miscellaneous (cooking, sports, survival skills, chess, foreign language, theater, animation, etc.). Let your imagination run wild and consider topics that you are interested in or passionate about.
